And a chubby little baby competition its characters treat with the utmost seriousness. What the Hell? A cavalcade of great Tim Robinson character names: Taffy Lee Fubbins. “Baby of the Year” (Season 1, Episode 1)īest Line: “I hope you fucking die, Harley Jarvis!” A Tim Robinson character would rather risk death than knowingly embarrass himself in public, and the proof is in this particular pudding.Ġ5. Here, choking at a restaurant at a shared table with a celebrity he respects, he chooses to ignore it, squeaking and croaking out his lines as if nothing were wrong. What the Hell? Robinson’s characters have more double-downs than a KFC franchise, and it often gives him the chance to put that goblin-esque physicality to good use. “Choking” (Season 1, Episode 5)īest Line: “A toast to friends… and friendship in a tradit-in a tradition.” Take, for example, the notion of an after-hours ghost tour where you can say whatever the hell you want: what if you wanted to go on about cumshots and horse cocks? You should be able to do that, right, even if you’re ruining everyone else’s night? It ends on the saddest note possible - this was a feeble attempt to make any kind of friend at all - make you almost, almost feel for such a disruptive, antisocial guy. What the Hell? I Think You Should Leave is all about idiot-proofing the little rules we put in place to keep civilization moving. And through it all, it’s deathly funny from minute to minute. Assholes of every stripe are laid bare, in all their blinkered selfishness and hidden pain. In any given I Think You Should Leave sketch, you’ll see yourself or someone you know: The friend you know is pretending to love the lackluster gift you got them, or the office funny guy who makes you feel small even though he’s just joshing. But for those who can tune in to that particular frequency, a great Tim Robinson sketch feels like speaking (or farting) truth to power, honing in on the everyday foibles we go through on a daily basis and exaggerating them to their fullest, most hilarious extent. Tim Robinson’s comedic wavelength is very specific: It’s not for everyone, with its esoteric references to old media or Robinson’s deliberately off-putting screen presence (the haunting grins, the random yelling, the alien, childlike syntax of his every line). The show’s relevance and hilarity transcends its own existence, really even if you don’t know who Tim Robinson is, his works have had some kind of impact on the way you communicate. Talk to someone who’s never seen a sketch, and chances are they’ve at least seen the meme of Tim Robinson in the hot dog outfit, or the guy from the focus group sketch saying “Stinky!!” or dabbing. Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday with the funeral home and the city. It’s astounding to think of the impact I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinsonhas had on broader pop culture - in certain Twitter-poisoned areas of the Internet, at any rate. “I used to go to the Library of Congress when I was in school in 1994 to read her unpublished manuscripts at those tables with the little green light,” the artist says. Last year, the New York Times asked her to make a quilt of the late African American science fiction writer Octavia Butler. She gets a lot of portrait requests, but she only takes the ones she finds personally meaningful. “This is my first professional space,” Butler says. Today, in her studio, she uses two giant longarm quilting machines affectionately named Godzilla and Godzuki after the 1970s Hanna-Barbera children’s series. Until last August, Butler worked from her home in South Orange, New Jersey, annexing the dining room table and living room floor, stitching by hand or on a standard household sewing machine. “After all of that, I load my quilt top onto my quilting machine and stitch it together with the batting and the backing fabric,” she says, describing a sewing practice known as appliqué. The selection, cutting, pinning and layering process consumes hundreds of hours. I don’t know how many years it takes or how long that oil is going to smell like her.” My mother was Muslim and wore Muslim oils. “When you open the bin, the scent of jasmine and rose comes out. “I feel my mother and grandmother’s presence, because some of the fabrics I use are still some of their fabrics,” she tells me in her Jersey City studio. “I cut shapes based off my sketch and layer them until I have an image that is an impression of the original.” Over the decades, she has collected snippets and swaths of material, which she stores in large plastic bins: silk, wool, lace, velvet, hand-dyed batiks, vibrant African Dutch waxes, holographic vinyl. “I use that like a dressmaker’s pattern,” she says. My father spoke to me about the liberation of Ghana, his birthplace, in 1954, and I wish I had been there.”īutler enlarges each image on photo paper, using a Sharpie to delineate light-to-dark gradation. My maternal grandmother would talk to me about her Louisiana Creole relatives. “I was so curious about these people and places I would never know. “I grew up looking at my family photos, which were black and white,” she says. She takes time to divine her subjects’ spirits-studying their gazes and stances, their clothing and accessories. (The last of these was a suggestion from her husband, John Butler, a longtime professional DJ.) Her sources vary widely: Farm Security Administration archives, a 1909 Rufus Holsinger portrait, Janette Beckman’s fiercely feminist 1987 photo of rappers Salt-N-Pepa. The horse fabric in this subject’s collar is called “I Run Faster Than My Rival.”īutler always begins with a photograph. Her subjects shimmer in brilliant hues of fuchsia, imperial blue or acid green, with a purple lip, an orange cheekbone or a turquoise temple for emphasis. She focuses on people of African descent but avoids representational skin tone. Today, her life-size quilts hang in museums across the country. She made her first portrait quilt, Francis and Violette (Grandparents), while pursuing a master’s in arts education in 2001. Butler’s stunning work has helped shatter that barrier. For years, quilting has been dismissed by the fine arts world as decorative craft or domestic labor. The artist touches up her Questlove portrait using a longarm quilting machine, enabling her to sew the quilt’s top, back and batting at the same time.Ī renowned portraitist, Butler has done for quilt-making what Matisse did for paper-cutting: elevating a humble technique to a high art. It's totally unlike anything the mainline Mario series had done to that point and unlike anything Nintendo has attempted with it since.įor that, it's hard not to admire Nintendo for taking a bold chance with Sunshine. Stomping enemies will only get so far, since the main idea is to weaken foes by spraying them with water. Players must use the backpack to wash away sludge throughout Isle Delfino and weaken enemies along the way. However, the key mechanic involves using a water-filled backpack called FLUDD. Mario can still perform his different jumps and must collect the golden MacGuffins. In some ways, it follows the standard 3D Mario formula. Once the lengthy intro is out of the way, Sunshine turns into something unlike any Mario game to this point. Whereas the other 3D Mario games will have you up and running within a minute or so, Sunshine's introduction runs for nearly ten minutes. Worse, it eats up a good chunk of the introduction. The delivery comes across as stilted, awkward, and out-of-place. There is a lot of voice acting and all of it is terrible. First off, there's so much more voice acting than I would have ever expected out of a Mario game, just because I'm so used to Mario characters speaking through text bubbles. The first thing that popped out at me was the voice acting. It's different in a lot of ways and it goes farther than just the FLUDD backpack, though that's a big part of it. This marks my first time playing it and it absolutely feels like the stepchild of the Mario series. This was released during my college days when I was less focused on video games. Super Mario Sunshineįull disclosure: I had never played Super Mario Sunshine before. This is not a full 16x9 upgrade, but as long as you don't mind the smaller screen size, this is a fun time capsule for Mario fans. Sadly, Nintendo doesn't go all the way with the optimizations. It shows its age in places, namely with the camera and the visuals. Outside of the camera, Super Mario 64 still holds up as a fun platformer. The camera also gets in the way during those aforementioned Bowser fights, as it will spin around along with Mario as he swings Bowser by the tail, making it almost impossible to aim for the bombs. If you're trying to make a precision jump or make a turn while wearing the Flying Cap power-up, it can often be an active hinderance. And worse, if there's an object obstructing the Lakitu holding the camera, he'll just remain stuck in place. Instead, it rotates around Mario in bursts. It is a truly wretched system where it can't be freely rotated. It was considered bad in 1996 and has aged like 24-year-old spoiled milk. Super Mario 64's biggest weakness is easily its camera. The analog sticks on both the Switch Pro Controller and the Joy-Cons also make it easy to walk narrow areas or slow down whenever necessary. In fact, the Switch Pro Controller proves to be a wonderful way to play, allowing players to easily perform long jumps, back flips, and triple jumps. Fortunately for Switch owners, the controls easily translate from the N64 to the new console. With a 3D plane to play with, Mario gets a substantial increase in his arsenal from his 2D days. It's not exactly an easy feat, as I'll explain in just a moment. And this Bowser fight is a much more physical encounter than past games, requiring Mario to swing him by the tail and toss him into explosives. The ultimate objective is to collect enough Stars to face off against Bowser. Instead of running through a level from start to finish, players had full worlds to explore in an effort to find Power Stars. This Nintendo 64 launch title reinvented the typical Mario formula. Super Mario 64įor many people, Super Mario 64 was the birth of 3D platforming. The 3D Mario games have consistently remained high quality since that game's release, which is why the announcement of a Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection was met with excitement.īut how do these classic games hold up after so many years? Are Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy still the great platformers that they were considered to be when they first released? Let's look at these three games as individual titles while also judging this compilation as a comprehensive collection. While Mario is celebrating his 35th birthday, it was almost 25 years ago that Nintendo helped usher in the 3D platformer with Super Mario 64. The Mario series laid the foundation for many different games and remains the gold standard for several genres. |
